The Center for Immunology mourns the passing of Dr. Mike Murtaugh who passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mike Murtaugh, a professor of virology and immunology at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018, following a battle with pancreatic cancer, see the full write-up in the Star Tribune. Murtaugh's research was based on molecular mechanisms of disease resistance focusing on the interaction of pigs with bacterial and, especially, viral pathogens. In recent years, Murtaugh had been credited with significant advances in fundamental porcine immunobiology, especially those that are related to immune protection and immunomodulation; porcine antiviral immunity, and molecular virology as a means to understand genetic diversity and immunological challenges of viral origins. As part of Mike's legacy, the UMN College of Veterinary Medicine, Dean Ames and Mike's colleagues have created a new Graduate Science fellowship which will benefit CVM graduate students for years to come.
