The University of Minnesota Medical School has received a National Research Service Award Research Training Grant (T35) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support medical student research. This is the first time the UMN has received this important training grant from the NIH.

This 5-year grant titled ‘Medical Student Summer Research Program in Infection and Immunity’ will support medical student research during the summer months between the first and second year of medical school. The grant will fund 5 students this summer with the number growing to 9 students in the final year of the grant. Professor of Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases Dan Mueller, MD, is principal investigator of the grant.

“This is an exciting project and I’m already looking forward to the outcomes,” says Vice Dean for Medical Education Mark Rosenberg, MD. “We’re aiming to develop critical thinkers and increase student research involvement, and this grant represents an important step forward toward those goals. It also represents a wonderful collaboration between our Office of Medical Education, the Research Office, Dan Mueller, and the Center for Immunology, which we can be proud of.”
